Our Story
Letter from the Managing Director
Trish Botha
Dear friends, partners, and fellow Australians,
I founded Australian Indigenous AI (AI²) because our country stands at a crossroads where cutting-edge technology and the world’s oldest living cultures can—must—walk forward together. After more than two decades working alongside communities from Arnhem Land to Port Moresby, from Vanuatu to South Africa, I have seen first-hand that the greatest innovations emerge when people, place, and purpose are woven into one story. AI² exists to tell that story on a national scale.
Why we began
Growing up as a proud South Sea-Island Kanaka and Aboriginal woman, I learned that true progress is measured not in quarterly returns but in the wellbeing we leave for the next generation. My great-uncle, Eddie Mabo, proved that voices once dismissed can reshape a nation. His legacy fuels my passion to ensure First Nations people help steer Australia’s AI future, rather than being passengers to it.
Who we are
Our team is a diverse collective of technologists, , data scientists, engineers, and community builders. What binds us is a shared conviction that relationships precede transactions. Whether we are designing a computer-vision model for agricultural yield, training remote youth in Python, or advising government on data sovereignty, we start by listening—to Elders, to frontline workers, to industry partners—so every solution respects Country and delivers practical value.
Our commitment to all Australians
AI² is for every community, mine site, classroom, and start-up hub—urban or remote—seeking to harness technology for good. We channel a minimum of 10 % of annual surplus into:
Training & Scholarships – coding bootcamps, AI micro-credentials, and executive up-skilling for First Nations leaders.
Infrastructure – solar-powered edge servers, satellite-backed connectivity, and maker spaces in remote towns.
Technology Transfer – open-source toolkits, internship pipelines, and shared IP arrangements that keep value onshore and on-Country.
